Domino's Pizza Leaves Italy After Bankruptcy

Domino's Pizza is leaving Italy as Italians choose to buy from local pizzerias instead of the American brand.
The Domino's Pizza brand came to Italy in 2015 through a franchise deal with Italian company ePizza SpA. The first restaurant opened in Milan that year, and 28 more were later opened across the country, all of which are now closed.
Domino's and ePizza had planned to open as many as 880 restaurants, reports Bloomberg, but had a lot of competition from local pizza restaurants.
The brand had hoped to get customers by offering pizzas made with traditional Italian cheeses and meats, as well as toppings more common in the US, like pineapple.
CNN reported that ePizza had also planned to bring a large-scale pizza delivery service to the country — something that wasn't available in Italy in 2015.
However, ePizza filed for bankruptcy in April 2022, saying its business had been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. It also said that it had even more competition from local restaurants as they started using delivery apps like Deliveroo and Just Eat during the pandemic.
One Twitter user, Alicia Smith, wrote, "Trying to open Domino's Pizza in Italy is like trying to sell snow in the North Pole."
