Cheetahs to Be Reintroduced to India After 70 Years
睽違70年 印度將再度引進獵豹
Wild cheetahs are returning to India, 70 years after they became extinct in the country.
According to officials, the first group of eight cheetahs will arrive in their new home in Kuno National Park, in the central state of Madhya Pradesh, from Namibia in August.
An agreement was signed between India and Namibia in July 2022, two years after India's Supreme Court announced that African cheetahs could be reintroduced to the country in suitable locations.
Cheetahs became extinct in India in 1952, mainly because of habitat loss and hunting.
With fewer than 7,000 of them left in the wild, cheetahs are listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The largest group is found in Namibia.
Over the next few years, India hopes to introduce 50 cheetahs to parks around the country.
However, experts have said the plan may not work because there aren't many suitable cheetah habitats left in India.
Asiatic cheetahs were once found in several countries, including India, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Today, they are found only in Iran.
