This Italian Sport Combines Soccer, Rugby and Boxing

Thousands of people come together once a year in Florence, Italy, to watch teams play a game that was first created hundreds of years ago.

Calcio Storico, which can be translated to mean "historical football," is a Florentine tradition that began in the 16th century. It's a tournament that is played each June, in a game that looks like a combination of soccer, rugby and boxing.

The game is played with a round ball on sand that covers the Piazza Santa Croce — the square in front of the Santa Croce church.

The 27 people on each team play while wearing 16th century costumes, and points (or "cacce") are scored by kicking, throwing or carrying the ball into a low net that goes across the other team's side. However, if you kick or throw the ball over the net, the other team gets half a point.

And, perhaps most importantly: fighting is allowed. So, much of the game looks like a huge boxing match. However, players cannot attack from behind or kick each other in the head, and fights must be one-on-one.

Each game lasts 50 minutes. Time doesn't stop after goals — or even if someone gets hurt.
