Founded in 1885, Stanford University, in the San Francisco Bay area in California, is one of the hardest schools in the US to get into. The university only accepted about 4% of the almost 55,500 people who applied there for 2021.
Stanford is ranked fourth in Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings for 2022. The University of Oxford in the UK is in first place, while the California Institute of Technology and Harvard University are just ahead of Stanford on the list.
With over 32 square kilometers, Stanford has one of the largest campuses in the US. However, most classes at the college are small, having fewer than 20 students.
Some of the most popular courses at Stanford include computer science and engineering. The co-founders of Google, Netflix, Instagram, Snapchat, PayPal and Hewlett-Packard all went to Stanford. This may be helped by Silicon Valley — one of the most important global centers of the technology industry — being only about 20 minutes away by car.
The college has also produced 35 Nobel Prize winners and 18 Turing Award winners. Jessica Watkins, who in April 2022 will become the first black woman to work on the International Space Station, is also a Stanford graduate.
