These Italian Umbrellas Use the Sun to Keep You Cool

Italian ice cream company Sammontana has worked with designers to create a beach umbrella that uses solar power to keep its users cool.

The umbrella, called the Parelio, was designed to help people enjoy Italy's beaches and parks in the hot weather and stay cool, but in a way that is better for the environment.

The Parelio, which is 2.5 meters tall and 3.2 meters across, uses solar power to make enough electricity for a small fridge, or to make mist to help cool the air underneath it.

Multiple Parelio umbrellas can be also used together to make enough electricity for a large ice cream fridge.
Sammontana worked with designers from Carlo Ratti Associati and architect Italo Rota to develop the umbrella. It is made with solar panel technology similar to what is used by NASA. The solar panels were developed by Chuck Hoberman, an expert in design and engineering who also teaches at Harvard University.
The Parelio opens and closes like a flower, and the solar panels can be moved to get as much light from the sun as they possibly can.

A number of the solar umbrellas have been put in Milan's Biblioteca degli Alberi park, where people can enjoy them for free until August 8, 2021. The park is being used to see how well the Parelio works before the technology can be brought to Italy's coasts and beaches.
