Burger King Starts Selling Vegan Nuggets in the UK

Burger King has started selling vegan nuggets in the UK, becoming the first large fast-food restaurant in the country to do so.

The nuggets, which have been approved by The Vegan Society, were made by Burger King and its partner, The Vegetarian Butcher, using plant proteins. Burger King says they taste the same as its regular chicken nuggets.

The nuggets have joined Burger King's growing vegetarian and vegan menu in the UK. The restaurant released the Rebel Whopper, a plant-based burger, in 2020, and the Vegan Royale, a vegan "chicken" sandwich, in 2021.

Alasdair Murdoch, the Burger King UK CEO, explained that this is a step toward having a 50% meat-free menu by 2030, which is part of the company's promise to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 41% per restaurant by the same year. A 2021 study found that non-vegetarian diets produce 59% more greenhouse gases than vegetarian diets in the UK.
