How to Negotiate a Better Salary

Everybody would like to make more money at work. But how should you ask for it? Here are some suggestions to help you negotiate better pay.

Know when to ask
While there's no perfect time to ask, you can try asking when being interviewed for a new job, or when getting a promotion that doesn't come with a salary increase. It can also help to start suggesting the idea several months early so your boss can plan to pay you more in their next budget.

Do your research
It's important to know how much somebody in your job would usually be paid. Try looking online for listings of jobs similar to yours, to see if their salaries are similar to what you're being offered. 

Ask for more than you want
It can be a good idea to ask for more money than you actually expect to get. Your boss may say no, but they may also consider something closer to the amount you suggest. It may also help to ask for a very exact number — so $59,750, not $60,000 — because your boss is more likely to think you've done research to choose that number.
