New Zealand to Ban Cigarettes for Those Born After 2008

The government of New Zealand has announced that it will ban the sale of tobacco products to young people as part of the country's Smokefree Aotearoa 2025 Action Plan.

The new law will be introduced in 2022, and it will increase the legal age for buying cigarettes by one year every year, starting in 2027. Since the legal age now is 18, this will make it illegal for anyone born after the year 2008 to ever buy cigarettes.

"We want to make sure young people never start smoking," Dr. Ayesha Verrall, New Zealand's associate health minister, explained.

The law will also decrease the number of shops allowed to sell tobacco, dropping from about 8,000 to fewer than 500 in the whole country.

From 2025, the law will also reduce the amount of nicotine allowed in cigarettes to very low levels. Speaking to The Washington Post, Richard Edwards of the University of Otago said New Zealand will be the first country in the world to introduce this rule. If successful, it could become an example for how other countries can also become smoke-free.
