Your Internet Tabs Can Raise Money for Charity

Are you the sort of person who always has too many browser tabs open? If so, you could help raise money for charity simply by getting an app.

Tab for a Cause is a free browser app that puts ads on the screen every time you open a tab, and donates part of its ad income to charity.

The app began in 2011, when Alex Groth and Kevin Jennison — high school friends who were studying at colleges in Iowa and California at the time — tried to think of ways they could support charities.

"We always had 100 tabs open on our computers," Groth told Fast Company in 2016. And they realized they could use the empty space on every new tab to sell ads.

The Tab for a Cause app can be easily added to most internet browsers. Users receive "hearts" for every new tab, as well as for inviting friends. The hearts can then be donated to any partner charity.

Each tab raises between about one-tenth of a cent and 1 cent, and the company says it donates at least 30% of this income to charities. By December 2021, the company said over $1.2 million had been raised for different charities around the world, including Human Rights Watch, Save the Children and Trees for the Future. It gave over $200,000 to charities just in 2020.
