Travel company Expedia has announced that it will no longer sell vacations that include experiences with captive dolphins, whales or similar animals.
Expedia is one of the largest travel companies in the world, selling flights, accommodation and tickets to many different attractions. Expedia Group also owns a number of popular travel websites and services, including Hotels.com, Cheaptickets and Ebookers.
Expedia's new rules mean that from early 2022, it won't sell tickets to shows where dolphins and whales have to perform. Tourists won't be able to use Expedia to buy tickets to attractions where they can do things like swim with captive dolphins and whales either.
Expedia will, however, still sell tickets for seaside sanctuaries where the animals won't be made to perform and can only be looked at.
Animal rights activists have been asking travel companies to stop selling tickets to whale and dolphin shows for a number of years. Such shows are already banned in places like Canada, India and Bolivia. However, there are still 3,000 captive dolphins being used to entertain tourists around the world, according to The Guardian.
