Music is everywhere in our lives, and everywhere in the English language! Here are some common expressions that use songs and singing in many different ways.

If you buy or sell something "for a song," you do so for very little money. This expression was first used in writing in 1596, at a time when people singing in the street were given coins worth a very small amount by those walking past — so their songs weren't worth very much.

To "make a song and dance" about something means to act as though it's more important than it really is. A "song and dance" is a type of show, so to act in this way is to behave like a performer.

To have "a song in one's heart" means to be extremely happy. Throughout the history of the English language, the heart was often thought of as the part of the body that controls our emotions, and this is the meaning of the word that the expression uses.

A "swan song" is the last action or activity in the career of a person or group, such as a musician or band. It comes from the ancient Greek belief that swans sing a song before they die.
