The number of influencers in their 60s, 70s and 80s — much older than the average social media user — is growing.

Joan MacDonald, for example, is 75. She has 1.4 million followers on Instagram where she shares photos of herself at the gym and lifting weights.

"It's so rare to find someone her age being able to do all these things," said one of her followers, 18-year-old Marianne Zapata. "It's just such a positive thing to even think about."

MacDonald works with fitness companies, sharing their products on her social media page. She's even created her own fitness app only a few years after learning how to use technology herself.

Other older influencers focus on everything from beauty to gardening. Like MacDonald, they talk a lot about what's possible in life at age 60, 70 and 80.

Sandra Sallin, a blogger and artist with 25,300 followers on Instagram, said influencing has helped to expand her world when she felt like it was shrinking due to her age.

A 2019 survey by AARP found just 37% of those 70 and older used social media daily to connect with other people. And many rely on Facebook.
