As with many things, Brits and Americans have different names for many different foods. Here are just a few common examples.

A British chef making a veggie dish might start with "aubergines" and "courgettes," while an American would use "eggplants" and "zucchinis."

For both of these vegetables, British English uses French words. Americans, on the other hand, say "eggplant" because some types of this vegetable are white and look similar to eggs. Italian immigrants may have made the "zucchini" popular in America, so it's known by the Italian name there.

Another vegetable made popular in the US by Italian-Americans is "arugula," or rucola in Italian. In the UK, this same salad ingredient is called "rocket," which again, comes from the French name roquette.

Also, Americans cook with "cilantro," a herb that Brits prefer to call "coriander."

A popular dessert in Britain is a bowl of "jelly." However, in America, "jelly" is something you put on bread — or what the British call "jam." The American-English name for the dessert is "jello."
