'Lockdown' Named Collins Word of the Year 2020

Collins Dictionary has announced that its Word of the Year for 2020 is "lockdown." Collins says it chose the word because going into lockdown has been a shared experience for billions of people around the world.

The dictionary uses the Collins Corpus, a database that contains written and spoken examples of English, to make a list of words that are either new or that have been used a lot during the year. From this list, it then chooses its top word for the year.

Collins counted "lockdown" being used over 250,000 times in 2020, compared to just 4,000 times in 2019. "Coronavirus," the reason for lockdowns around the world, was also included on the list, and had been used 35,000 times more than last year.

Other pandemic phrases on the list include "key worker," and "social distancing."

The COVID-19 pandemic was not the only news story that had an impact on the Word of the Year list. "BLM" — or Black Lives Matter — was also on it, as 2020 saw protests against racism in the US around the world.

The Korean word "mukbang" was also on the list. But instead of being something political or medical, the word means an online video of a person eating a large amount of food. Mukbang videos may have first become popular in South Korea, but they have been getting fans in the English-speaking world.
